Watch the 47-second tour

The home page, a case study, the four project templates, the resume and publishing, filmed in the real template.

What it does that most portfolio templates in Notion don’t

It arrives as a finished website for a made-up designer, Alex Rivera, with drawn projects, services and client quotes. You see the whole thing working first, then swap in your own work one section at a time.

  • Four kinds of project

Design case study, Video project, Writing sample and Photo set, each with the right headings ready to fill in.

  • Your cover is your card

Add a cover to a project and it becomes the picture on its card in Selected work.

  • Hide without deleting

Tick Hide on home to keep a project off your home page. It stays in All projects.

  • Publish in three clicks

Share, Publish, then Publish again. After that, your site changes as soon as you edit the page.

We set it up from a fresh copy, the way you’ll get it: picked Design case study from New, checked that the card showed up on the home page, then cleared the samples and saw only our own project left.

What’s inside

The home page is the website: your hello and links, Selected work, Services, What clients say and Let’s work together. Every card opens a case study, and Resume has a page of its own.

A case study for every project

Each one opens with Client, Role, Year and Type, followed by The brief, What I did, Results and room for images.

Services, kind words and a way to reach you

Three services with a starting price, two client quotes and a short contact note with your email.

A one-page resume

Experience, education, skills, tools and languages in two columns, linked from your hello.

Also in the template

  • Looks right on a phone

The published site stacks into one column on a small screen.

  • Six drawn sample projects

Video, design, UX, writing and photo projects show how each kind of page looks.

  • Clear and bring back

One button hides the six sample projects, another brings them back. Your own projects are never touched.

  • A Start here page

Six short steps in your copy, with pictures of where to click. You delete it before you publish.

How to add new work

  1. In Selected work, click the arrow next to New and pick the kind of project.

  2. Fill in Client, Role, Year and the one-line Summary.

  3. Click Add cover so the card gets a picture.

  4. Write it up under the headings. Your site shows it right away.

Make it yours, one step at a time

You do this once. It’s easiest on a computer.

  1. Buy it on Etsy and download the Start here PDF. Open the template link in it and click the Duplicate icon (two small squares) at the top. A free Notion account is enough.

  2. Change the page title to your name, then rewrite the hello line, the short intro and your links.

  3. Click Clear sample projects on Start here. Projects you add yourself are never touched.

  4. In Selected work, click the small arrow next to New and pick the kind of project.

The arrow next to New opened, with Design case study, Video project, Writing sample and Photo set marked
  5. To keep a project off the home page, open it and tick Hide on home.

  6. Swap in your own Resume, services, prices and client quotes.

  7. Delete the gray line and Start here, then click Share, Publish and Publish again.

Publishing costs nothing, and your site lives at a notion.site address. Want your own domain? Notion sells that as a paid add-on.

Is it right for you?

A good fit if

  • You’re a designer, video editor, writer, photographer or UX designer.
  • You want a portfolio online this week without learning a site builder.
  • You want case studies, not only a grid of images.
  • You like changing your site yourself, whenever you want.

Look elsewhere if

  • You need a shop, bookings or payments on your site.
  • You want full control over fonts and layout. A Notion site keeps Notion’s look.
  • You need your own domain for free. That’s a paid Notion add-on.

Questions

Do I need hosting or a website builder?

No. You publish the page from Notion with Share and Publish, and Notion hosts it for free.

Can I use my own domain?

Yes, with Notion’s paid custom domain add-on. Without it, you get a free notion.site address.

Does it work for writers and photographers?

Yes. Pick Writing sample or Photo set when you add a project, and each opens with its own headings.

Will visitors see the sample projects?

Not once you clear them. Clear sample projects hides all six, and you can delete them for good from All projects.

Is the rest of my Notion public too?

No. Only the page you publish and the pages inside it, like your projects and Resume, can be seen.

Where does the template go after I pay?

You download a Start here PDF from Etsy with the template link. Open the link and click the Duplicate icon at the top of the page, and the copy is yours to keep and change.

What if I get stuck?

The databases

DatabaseWhat it holds
Projects Project, Client, Role, Year, Type, Summary, Live link and Hide on home, with four templates: Design case study, Video project, Writing sample and Photo set.

How it works inside

Selected work
A gallery of Projects, newest year first, that skips anything marked Hide on home. All projects shows every one.
Card pictures
Each card shows the project’s page cover, so a project without a cover has a plain card.
Clear sample projects
Hides the six samples. Projects you add are never touched.
