What it does for you

The 12 week year comes down to a simple loop: pick a few goals, plan the week, do the work and score it. Most of the effort in a planner goes into keeping that loop going, so we made the planner do the counting and setting up for you.

  • 12 weeks in one click

Choose a start Monday, and one click on Set up 12 weeks adds each week with its own page and dates. The home page always knows which week you’re in.

  • A score that adds itself up

Each week’s score is what you did out of what you planned. Tick a task and it moves, and your average sits next to the 85% aim.

  • Tactics in every week

Write a tactic once, like Run 3 times. One click on + Every week adds it as a task to each week of your cycle.

  • Goals with a number

Give a goal a target, like 10 km or 3,000 saved, and update Current. A goal without one fills in from its tasks.

We set it up from a fresh copy, the way you’ll get it: cleared the sample, started a cycle, clicked Set up 12 weeks, added a goal and a tactic, clicked + Every week and ticked a task.

What’s inside

The home page shows the cycle you’re in, this week’s tasks, the scorecard for all 12 weeks and your goals. Each cycle, goal and week has a page of its own.

This cycle

One card with the week you’re on, the days left, this week’s score, your average against the 85% aim and the progress of each goal.

The cycle card: week 5 of 12, 2 of 5 done this week, an 83% average and each goal’s progress

This week

Every task planned for this week, next to its goal. Tick them off here and the score follows.

Five tasks for this week such as Run 3 times and Move 250 to savings, each with its goal

Scorecard

All 12 weeks with their dates, tasks planned and done, and a score bar. Weeks still to come stay blank, so the bars show only what’s real.

Weeks 1 to 12 with dates, planned and done tasks and scores of 100, 80, 75, 75 and 40%

Goals

One row per goal with its Progress and how you measure it. Open a goal for why it matters, its tactics and its tasks.

Three goals with progress bars: Run a 10K at 60%, Save 3,000 at 25% and a course at 44%

Cycle page

Each cycle holds your vision, its goals and its weeks, with each week marked Past, This week or Coming.

  • Weekly review

Each week has a Review box for a few lines on what worked and what to change.

  • Week 13

Every new cycle comes with four questions for the week after week 12, before you start the next one.

  • Sample data

A sample cycle in week 5 with three goals and their tasks. One button hides it all.

  • A Start here page

Five short steps inside your copy, with pictures of where to click.

How to use it

  1. Each day, open the home page and look at This week.

  2. Tick tasks off as you do them. The week’s score updates on its own.

  3. Moved closer to a goal with a number? Update its Current.

  4. At the end of the week, open the week, write a short review and look at your score.

Set it up in about five minutes

Do this once per cycle. It’s easiest on a computer.

  1. Buy it on Etsy and download the Start here PDF. Open the template link in it and click the Duplicate icon (two small squares) at the top. A free Notion account is enough.

  2. Open Start here and click Clear sample data. The sample cycle moves out of sight with its goals, weeks and tasks.

  3. Open Cycles, click New, name your cycle and pick the Monday you start in Start. Then click Set up 12 weeks.

A new cycle page with its Start date and the Set up 12 weeks button marked
  4. On your cycle page, click New page under Goals. Add why it matters and how you’ll measure it, plus a Target and Current if it has a number.

New page marked under Goals, then a goal page with Progress, Target and Current marked
  5. Open the goal and click New page under Tactics for something you’ll do every week. Then click + Every week to put it in all 12 weeks.

A tactic with its + Every week button marked, and New page marked under Tactics
  6. Tick tasks off in This week on the home page. Your score fills in as you go.

One to three goals is plenty. Doing 85% of what you planned is a great week.

Is it right for you?

A good fit if

  • You like the idea of a 12 week year and want it ready to use.
  • You want a weekly score without adding anything up yourself.
  • You work better with a deadline 12 weeks out than a whole year.
  • You want a few goals and a clear plan for each week.

Look elsewhere if

  • You want a daily planner with times and a calendar.
  • You want a habit tracker with a box for every day.
  • You want to plan a team’s quarter. It’s made for one person.
  • You want the book’s workbook pages. This is a planner, not a copy of the book.

Questions

Does it work on the free Notion plan?

Yes. It runs on databases, formulas and buttons, and the free plan has all three.

Is this the official 12 Week Year template?

No. 12 Week Year is a trademark of Brian P. Moran, LLC, and we have no tie to the book or its authors. This is our own planner built on the same idea: a few goals, weekly tactics and a weekly score.

How is the weekly score worked out?

It’s the tasks you did out of the tasks you planned for that week, so 4 of 5 is 80%. Your average comes from the weeks that are over, and the aim is 85%.

What if I add a tactic halfway through?

It counts from the current week on. Weeks that are already over keep their score, so the average stays fair.

Do I have to start in January?

No. A cycle starts on any Monday you pick and runs 12 weeks from there. Starting mid-week? Pick the Monday of that week.

What happens after week 12?

Take a week to look back with the four questions on your cycle page. Then make a new cycle and click Set up 12 weeks again. Old cycles stay where they are.

Can I use it on my phone?

Yes. Setup is easiest on a computer. On a phone, ticking off this week’s tasks takes a tap, and the score updates the same way.

Where does the template go after I pay?

You download a Start here PDF from Etsy with the template link. Open the link and click the Duplicate icon at the top of the page, and the copy is yours to keep and change.
